2021 Great Change: the World a nd China

In December 2021, the National Strategy Institute of Tsinghua University held a series of seminars as a 2021 year-end Situation Conclusion. The participants believed that, with the reciprocal effect of the profound changes unseen in a century and the new era of growth China is witnessing, the international strategic pattern had seen a dramatic evolution and the world had entered a period of turmoil and reform during the Covid-19 Pandemic. The competition between powers is heating up significantly. The balance of power among major powers is undergoing a kind of adjustment. Several regions are experiencing turbulence and disorder. More and more hot events happened. Such global challenges call for better global governance, and the global counter-pandemic endeavour is resulting in a new pattern. For China, the year of 2021 has witnessed the historical convergence of its “Two Centennial Goals”, and set out on a new journey to build a modern socialist country in all respects. China’s economy has been maintaining a medium-to-high-speed growth. The reform and opening-up has also entered a deeper stage. Chinese people’s living standards continue to improve, and the Chinese society has remained stable. However, the external environment of economic and social development is becoming more complex and volatile. The sparkling ideas and arguments shared at those series of seminars are now edited as the “Tsinghua National Strategy Research Report” to share in academia.
